Posttraumatic stress disorder, or PTSD as it is often called, usually results from exposure to a traumatic event where a person experiences or witnesses actual or threatened death or serious injury causing the person to experience intense fear, helplessness, or horror. Soldiers returning from active duty in a war zone are often found to suffer from PTSD as are individuals who survived serious automobile accidents or other serious trauma.
A person suffering from this disorder will often re-experience the event through recurrent and intrusive recollections, distressing dreams, and overwhelming feelings as though the event were reoccurring. This can lead to sleep problems, outbursts of anger, difficulty concentrating, hyper vigilance, or exaggerated startle responses.
Those suffering from PTSD will often attempt to avoid stimuli associated with the trauma. This can lead to a diminished interest in once important activities, feeling of detachment from others, a restricted range of affection, and an inability to look to the future. Because of the overwhelming emotions and intrusion of the disorder, it can cause significant distress in social, occupational and other important areas, including marriage and child rearing.
